Global LNG regas capacity to grow 36% by 2023
Global liquefied natural gas (LNG) regasification capacity is expected to grow by 36% by 2023, to reach 60.8 trillion cubic feet (Tcf), Kallanish Energy learns from a new report by analytics firm GlobalData.
The UK-based firm said this week Asia will drive more than half of this growth, led by India, Pakistan and China. India continues to dominate global regasification capacity additions and capex spending, and the country alone will add 2.7 Tcf of new capacity to the markets.
“In Asia, a total of 47 terminals are expected to contribute new-build capacity of 8.2 Tcf by 2023,” said oil and gas analyst Adithya Rekha. “Of these, Bangladesh’s Matarbari terminal has the highest LNG regasification capacity of 0.54 Tcf. The terminal is expected to start operations in 2023.”
Further new-build LNG regasification installations will come from Europe, which ranks as the second-largest region for new capacity with a total of 10 planned and announced terminals. These would add some 2.1 Tcf regas capacity by 2023, GlobalData estimates. The biggest capacity is set to come from Germany’s Wilhelmshaven floating terminal at 0.35 Tcf.
